Prinpcles of Feeding and Watering
When feeding a horse these are some things to do to make it easier:
-feed in the stall (if possible) this helps from horses stealing food from each other - when not in the stall be sure to space the buckets along a fence to keep distance from other horses -to have a list of who get how much and what kind in the feed room -have different sized cans to measure out the feed -have labels on the feed -store the food in a dry area where pests cannot get in -have feed buckets with names if you are feeding multiple horses ( or if there are no feeds pans in stall) -have a schedule of feeding time and stay on schedule -If in a large barn a grain cart that has wheels may help What not to do when feeding: - Do not just put a large amount of feed in field for all the horse. They do not know when to stop eating. This will increase chances of colic. -do not over feed a horse, it is much easier putting weight on a horse than needing to work it off later. -make sure the feed is not too dusty or powdery, Horse have a hard time licking up fine minerals. When watering horse here are a few things that might help: -change buckets regularly (morning and at night) -scrub buckets out every once in a while or when they get dirty -keep as far as possible from the hay so it stays clean - having buckets will let you know if a horse has been drinking or not -in the winter put warm water in the bucket so it does not freeze or get a heater for outdoor water troughs |
