Bandages, Wraps, and Boots
There are different type of wrapping and bandages, each for their own used. These wraps are used to keep the tendons and ligament covered to prevent injury. Here are a couple that are commonly used:
Bell Boots These boots are commonly used for protecting the heel and bulbs on a hoof. Horse that accidently hit the foot on front of the other can bruise or damage. This is a protective covering that normally made of rubber, which forms a cushion. Bell Boots fit under the fetlock and around the pastern. They can either Velcro on or be pulled on with at least two fingers between the leg and boot to prevent it being too tight or too lose. Tendons Boots These boots are for the front legs only. They protect the tendons and ligaments of the front legs. Jumpers tend to use these to protect against striking a pole or the hind hooves. These elastic or Velcro straps that hold them in place, with an open front allowing for air flow. Fetlock Boots About the same for the Tendon Boots but for the back legs. These are also open in the front to allow air flow. Polo Wraps Polo Wraps are stretchy fabric that comes in different sizes and colors. They help prevent pulled muscles, scrapes, bruises, and irritation from dirt or sand. Not used for trail riding because sticks and burrs can get caught on them. Wrapping the wraps on is very important because making the wraps too tight can cause injury but too lose can cause them to slip off while riding. When wrapping start with the fabric wrapped up evenly and tight, this will help putting it on evenly and smooth. Start with the end on the middle inside part of the leg wrapping towards you. You want to go down evenly and snug pulling only against the bone not the tendons. When getting to the fetlock joint it is advised to make "V" in the front when wrapping back up the leg. When you below the knee Velcro the fabric together. Check to make sure there is not any lumps or evenness. When done riding take the polo wraps off and wash so it will be clean for the next time. Standing Wrap these are wraps that you would want to use in the stall. They protect the horse’s legs and help not get stocked up after exercise. These wraps consist of a padding that is wrapped around the leg first then a polo wrap on top to hold in to place. To put a standing wrap on is the same as putting a polo wrap on but you want to stay inside of the padding. ts |
